Michael Jones' Ceramics
Nearly all of our food is served on Michael Jones' pottery, which some pieces are made especially for Wolfdale's. The story goes, Jones was Chef Douglas Dale's college professor when he attended school in Ohio to study ceramics and influenced Dale to go to Japan to further learn the art of pottery. Every piece of Jones' ceramics is for sale at our restaurant from the butter dishes to the garden stools. The unique dishware makes for an excellent conversation piece and the flower vases are the biggest sellers.
Since 1991 Jones' has been making functional ceramics full time, thereby offering people ongoing opportunities to integrate his work into their daily lives. His studio is equipped for a wide range of hand techniques—wheel throwing, slab construction and molded ware. From the many types of possibilities in ceramics, he has chosen to produce stoneware (firing it to temperatures of 2300˚F) for its all around toughness, durability, and to be absolutely food and dishwasher safe. Using a gas-fueled kiln has enabled him to alter the fuel-air ratios to influence the color and tone of glazes. With this approach, a variety of quiet subtleties of color and texture are developed. There are subsequent variations in glaze tone and color, which are an integral aspect of the aesthetics of this work.
We are particularly special in the sense that we allow our walls to act as an art gallery for local artists. Every 3-4 months we select one or two artists and/or photographers to hang their art throughout the restaurant, not only do they receive excellent exposure, but their art can be purchased at anytime. At the beginning of every exhibit we hold an art reception with hors d'oeuvres, cocktails, and wine for people to come and view the newly displayed show. Local artists and photographers have included Andy Skaff, Kenny Voltz, Missy Sandeman, Hank Devre, Steve Wilson, Bob Ash, etc.
Great Gift Ideas
We make, bottle, and sell our very own dressing and marinade called 'Asian Persuasion' as well as Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar.
We sell various garments embroidered or silkscreened with our logo. Our apparel inventory usually includes Velcro and flex-fit hats, T-shirts, polo shirts, hooded sweatshirts, and pull-over sweaters.
Oddly enough, we have somehow gotten into the book business. We retail books by several of our very talented friends, such as: Joanne Neft's 'Placer County's Real Food' and 'The Art of Real Food' (coming soon), Richard Milgrim's 'Japanese Ceramic Making', and if available, the current artist’s or photographer's book.
